IVAE Cull manual

IVAE Cull culls a whole session in one afternoon: it reads the preview the camera stores inside every RAW, measures focus and exposure, detects faces and closed eyes, groups the bursts and suggests the best shot of every moment. Everything runs on your computer: no photo is uploaded. At the end you export XMP for Lightroom or Capture One, or the developed JPGs.

This manual covers the installed app on Mac and on Windows. The screenshots are the app as it is.

Getting started

The start screen: open the session folder or drag it in
The start screen: open the session folder or drag it in
  1. Install the app (see Installation) and sign in with your IVAE Gallery studio account. Cull is included in every plan.
  2. Press Open folder (or the O key) and choose the session folder, or drag it onto the window. It reads ARW, CR2, CR3, NEF, DNG, RAF, ORF and RW2, and JPG too.
  3. The analysis starts on its own. The bar at the bottom says how many are done; you can start looking at the first ones while the rest finish.
  4. Recent folders stay on the start screen so you can go back with one click.

The loupe

The loupe: the big photo with the faces marked, the data panel and the session strip below

The loupe shows one big photo with the session strip below. On top of the photo are the faces the AI found, each with its verdict (eyes open or closed, focus, smile). On the right, the panel with the AI score, the focus and exposure bars, the camera data and the photo's tags (blurry, closed eyes, tilted, copy of another).

The grid and the drawer

The grid with the filter drawer open

The grid shows the whole session with the score in the corner of every photo and a colored border per scene. Cmd+A selects all visible photos (Ctrl+A on Windows).

The drawer (F, or the ☰ button) holds the filters and everything that acts on the whole session:

Scenes, compare and fast mode

The scene mosaic: one row per scene, the best one first

AI develop

My style (Cmd+Shift+E, the Style button) learns from your Lightroom catalog how you develop and applies that style to the session; the sliders can also be moved by hand. Mac only (the native developer); on Windows the loupe shows an approximate view and the adjustments do go to the XMP.

Installation

Download it at gallery.ivaestudios.com/productos#cull. Mac (Intel or Apple Silicon, macOS 10.15 or newer) and Windows 10 or newer, 64 bit. It updates itself: when there is an improvement it downloads it in the background and installs it when you close the app.

Troubleshooting

Mac blocks the installation

The first time you open it, macOS may say it cannot verify the developer or that the app is damaged.

  1. Open the Applications folder, right click (or Control + click) IVAE Cull and choose Open. In the warning, press Open again. It only happens once.
  2. If the warning offers no way to open, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down to the IVAE Cull notice and press Open Anyway.
  3. If it says the app is damaged, the download was incomplete: delete it, download it again from the products page and repeat step 1.

SmartScreen on Windows

The first time, Windows will say "Windows protected your PC". Nothing is wrong: the installer does not carry Microsoft's paid signature. Click More info and then Run anyway. It only happens once. To check that the file is ours, the download page shows its SHA-256 fingerprint; in PowerShell, Get-FileHash on the installer must give that same code.

Windows has no native developer: the loupe shows an approximate view of the develop, developed JPGs are not exported and the Lightroom catalog is not learned from. The XMPs do carry the adjustments and Lightroom applies them all the same.

License and two computers

Cull signs in with the email and password of your IVAE Gallery studio and comes with every plan: on 1 computer on the Free and Starter plans and on 2 on Solo, Pro and Studio. The password is never stored on the computer.
